When the charity was formed back in 2011 as Cornwall Freewheelers, the Duchy’s Volunteer Blood Bike service was born and over the years the charity has taken baby steps to quietly and conscientiously provide a professional service.
In 2015 a rebrand was needed and the new era of Cornwall Blood Bikes beckoned. In that time we have always had wonderful support from greater established Blood Bike charities across the Country and the opportunities to purchase excellent condition second hand BMW 1200 RTP bikes.
BMW 5 was purchased back in September 2017 as a stop gap to help keep providing our service after a serious fleet bike breakdown.
It was delivered to Cornwall on a pallet having been purchased by our Fleet Manager John and Operations Manager Stephan.
Its start mileage was 64,201 miles and to date (November 2020) has 103,043 miles on the clock having completed 38, 842 miles on shift with us here at CBB.
BMW 5 has been sited all over the County but it is a particular favourite of our volunteer advanced riders that leave in the East area of our County.
So quite often you will find our BMW 5 bike on shift riding past the sites such as Kit Hill, Minions and The Cheesewring and very often you will find the bike over the border liaising with our colleagues Freewheelers EVS to relay time critical blood samples to Bristol for testing or indeed taking samples to North Devon District Hospital.
