When the charity was formed back in 2011 as Cornwall Freewheelers, the Duchy’s Volunteer Blood Bike service was born and over the years the charity has taken baby steps to quietly and conscientiously provide a professional service.
In 2015 a rebrand was needed and the new era of Cornwall Blood Bikes beckoned.
In that time we have always had wonderful support from greater established Blood Bike charities across the Country and the opportunities to purchase excellent condition second-hand BMW 1200 RTP bikes.
Our BMW 15 was purchased around this year in the Summer of 2020 as an excellent second-hand bike with 79,497 miles on the clock from our colleagues at Severn Freewheelers EVS; the regional Blood Bike group covering Gloucestershire, Hereford & Worcester & North Wilts.
Once again our Fleet Manager John headed over the Tamar and this time with our volunteer advanced rider & Charity Trustee Paul Thomas.
This bike was collected and brought home to Kernow on the most magnificent of days for weather just after the national lockdown was lifted.
As a charity we launched our emergency 24/7 response on the 17th March to support the NHS in Cornwall during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and the dedication that has been seen from our volunteer riders and coordinators has been simply astounding.
CBB on average have been covering 24,000 operational miles a month, so this bike was brought into our fleet at probably the most iconic time in our history.
BMW 15 has now 82,822 miles on the clock (November 2020) which has covered approx 3,000 operational miles with us here at CBB serving the Counties hospitals and hospices also assisting in couriering suspect COVID-19 swabs to The Royal Cornwall Hospital for urgent testing.
